Bayberry
Myrica pensylvanica Loisel.
A bushy shrub that can grow up to 2.0 m in height. The leaves are alternate, glossy or shiny on top with fine hairs on the lower surface. The plants are dioecious (having either male or female, flowers on different plants. The male catkins are 1.2 cm long and the female catkins are 1.0 cm long. Flowering occurs in June. The fruits are nearly round nutlets covered with a waxy white substance. The entire plant is quite fragrant. Once a common weed in blueberry fields it is now well controled.
