Black Huckleberry
Gaylussacia baccata (Wang.) K. Koch
A much branched, slightly hairy common shrub of lake shores, barrens and bogs that grows >1.0 m in height, but is less than 0.5 m tall in blueberry fields. It spreads by rhizomes forming dense patches and looks like a large blueberry plant. The leaves are alternate, oblong and the undersides are shiny, with yellow resinous glands. They turn bright red in September. Flowering occurs in early June. The flowers are reddish and arranged in a raceme. The fruit is a black, edible berry.
