Lion’s Paw
Prenanthes trilobata (Cass.) Fern.
A tall, smooth perennial with a red waxy stem 1.0 m or more tall. The lower leaves have long stalks and 3 large lobes; the upper ones are oval to slightly heart-shaped. The entire plant contains a milky latex. The compound flowers are bell-like, nodding and cream to white with a purple tinge. They produce a brownish pappus at maturity to wind-disperse seed. Blooms in August and September.
