Orange Hawkweed
Hieracitan aurantiacum L.
An erect perennial which can grow from 10-70 cm tall. It can reproduce either by seed, by a long spreading root system or by above ground runners. Leaves are found mostly at the base, with one or 2 small leaves found on the stem. They are club-shaped and like the rest of the plant covered in stiff hairs. One identifying feature of orange hawkweed is that the entire plant contains a milky juice. The flowers are compound (2 types of flowers) with orange ray florets (Petal-like) about 2 cm. in diameter. Flowering occurs from June to August. Seeds are oblong, purplish black with dirty coloured white hairs (pappus) attached. A common weed of lawns, pastures and roadsides. It is found occasionally in blueberry fields.
