Red and White Clover
Trifolium pratense L. and E repens L.
Perennial legumes, often short-lived, with characteristic compound clover leaves with three oval leaflets on long stalks. Red clover is stout and upright to 60 cm tall and covered with dense hairs. White clover is much smaller, creeping, roots at stem nodes and the plant is smooth, lacking hairs. Tips of red clover leaflets are pointed; those of white clover are notched. Both have an inverted white ‘V on the upper surface. Numerous, small, irregular pea-like flowers are clustered into a round flower head on the end of long flowering stalks. Those of red clover are generally pink to red and those of white clover are white to pink . Both species may be highly variable. Blooms from June to September.
