Speckled Alder
Alnus incana (L.)Moench. ssp. rugosa (DuRoi) Clausen
A coarse, multi-stemmed shrub regenerating from a crown up to 2.0 m or more tall and adapted to wet soils. Stems are smooth, reddish-brown with orange pits. Leaves are oval, thick, with toothed inargns. Protruding veins on lower surface are covered with hairs. Flowers are borne in persistent cone-like catkins. Male catkins are long and narrow; female catkins are shorter and oval.
