Spreading Dogbane
Apocynum androsaemifolium L.
Erect, perennial, growing to 75 cm tall and spreading by rhizomes. Stems and leaves contain a white latex. Leaves opposite with pointed tips and hairy undersides, often drooping. Clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers have 5 white fused petals that are red-streaked inside. Fruit is a long slender pod 5 to 15 cm long that splits at maturity releasing numerous small seeds bearing tufts of tawny-colored hairs. Blooms from mid-June to August.
