St. John’s Wort
Hypericum perforatum L.
An erect, multi-branched, short-lived perennial up to 50 cm tall that may spread by rhizomes . Leaves are opposite, oval, without hairs and smooth margins. Leaves have clear glands that appear as small pinholes in the leaf blade and black glands along the margins of leaves and petals. These glands contain a photoactive toxin. Flowers have 5 bright yellow petals and the fruit is a small, brown sticky capsule containing numerous tiny, round, black seeds. Seedlings and young plants may be confused with several related native species. A native pathogen and an introduced beetle may provide significant control. Blooms from June to September.
