Sticky Groundsel
Senecio viscosus L.
An erect, branched annual with alternate, oblong, deeply-lobed leaves. The entire plant is covered with short, sticky hairs – hence its name. The flower is a compound, vase-shaped head with small, yellow disc and ray florets that lack conspicuous ‘petals’ . There are black tipped bracts at the base of the flower head. At maturity, a dandelion-like pappus distributes wind-borne seed. Blooms from July to September. Similar to common groundsel which lacks the sticky hairs.
