Teaberry (Checkerberry)
Gaultheria procumbens L.
A very low-growing, evergreen plant with the fragrance and taste of wintergreen that may occur in large patches. The leathery leaves have toothed margins and occur at the top of short, erect stems. Leaves are a waxy, dark-green and turn reddish with age. The white, bell-shaped flowers have 5 teeth and occur in the leaf axils. The fruit is a bright red berry that persists over-winter.
