Yellow Rattle
Rhianthus crista-galli L.
An erect, stout, simple or branched annual 20 to 60 cm tall with square stems. Leaves are opposite, lance-shaped with toothed margins. Flowers occur singly in leaf ails. Petals are fused into a yellow floral tube. The sepals form a paper-thin, bladder-like capsule that swells as the seed matures – hence the ‘rattle. Blooms mid June to late July. Some strains of yellow rattle have black lines on the stem and purple markings on the petals.
