Black Chokeberry
Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Ell.
A shrub that can grow to 2.0 m in height but is usually only 30-40 cm tall in blueberry fields. Forms compact patches from rhizomes. Leaves are alternate and dark, waxy green with toothed margins. Stems and leaves are smooth with few, if any, hairs. Cherry-like flowers with 5 white petals and numerous pistils are borne in a cyrne. Flowering occurs from May to early June. The fruit is a black pome and is poisonous.
