Black Knapweed
Centaurea nigra L.
An erect, much-branched perennial up to 80 cm tall. Leaves are variable with smooth to deeply lobed margins. Mature plants form a dense rosette of basal leaves. Flowers are borne on the ends of branches. Flowers are compound with numerous rose-purple florets and below these is a globe-shaped involucre of densely packed, black tipped bracts. Blooms July to September.
