Black Sedge
Casey nigra (L.) Reich.
Most common of many Casey species found in bluebeny fields. Spreading by rhizomes and often forming dense mats, especially in wet areas . A grass-like plant but with V-shaped leaves and triangular stems from 10 to 50 cm tall. Several dark spikes per flowering stem. Individual female flowers are enclosed in a papery sac.
