Several common low-growing, perennial species occur that may spread by rhizomes. Leaves are heart-shaped with long stalks and mostly basal. Flowers are fragrant and have 5 irregular petals that may be purple, white or yellow depending on species. Petals are fused into a floral tube with a ‘spur’. Blooms in May and June.
