Bristly Sarsparilla
Aralia hispida Vent.
A much-branched perennial up to 1.0 m tall arising from a stout rhizome or underground stem. Extensively bristled at the base of the plant; less so near the top. Pinnately compound leaves with 5 or more sharply toothed leaflets. Small, long-stalked flowers with 5 white to green petals occur in terminal umbels. The fruit is a dark blue to black berry. Blooms in July.
