Colt’s Foot
Tussilago farfara L.
A perennial with spreading underground rhizomes. One of the earliest flowering plants. A stout, unbranched flowering stem with pink scales and white hairs emerges before the leaves and is topped with a yellow, compound dandelion-like flower. A white dandelion-like pappus forms at maturity to distribute the wind-borne seed. Large, roughly heart-shaped leaves up to 30 cm in diameter with long stalks appear later. These have wavy margins and hairy undersides. Blooms in late March to June.
