Common Speedwell
Veronica officinalis L.
A small, coarse, prostrate plant that spreads by rooting at the leaf nodes. Stems are square and hairy. Leaves are opposite, hairy, broad, elliptical and toothed. Numerous stalked flowers are found in a terminal spike. Four, streaked light purple petals are fused at the base. The fruit is a heart-shaped seed pod. Blooms in July and August.
