Two similar species that form dense tussocks of fine, wiry stems with narrow, thread-like leaves with pointed tips . The tussocks may grow together forming thick sods. The flowering head is a compact panicle that appears like a spike. Plants are short (20 to 40 cm tall) but may become larger under high fertility. They mature early, becoming dry and yellow brown in late summer . Often associated with dry and infertile soils
