A coarsely hairy, erect, much-branched annual 30 to 80 cm tall with square stems that are usually swollen at the nodes. Leaves are oppo:lte with coarsely toothed margins and hairy upper surfaces. Flowers have a floral tube that is white to pink and often variegated. They occur in terminal, bristly clusters. Each flower produces 4 egg-shaped seeds. Fruit with thorn-like bracts. Blooms from late-June to September
