Lady’s Thumb
Polygonum persicaria L.
Lady’s-thumb is a slender, semi-erect annual with smooth, usually reddish stems up to 80 cm long. Leaves are smooth, lance-shaped with a dark ‘thumb print’ on the upper surface. Stem nodes are swollen and leaf axils are surrounded by a thin, papery sheath fringed with a row of stiff hairs. Numerous, small white to pink flowers are found in elongated tennnial spikes. Blooms from late June to October.
