Large Hop Clover
Trifolium campestre Schreber
A small, much-branched annual legume less than 40 cm tall. It resembles black medic (Medicago lupulina L.) but this species is smaller, with smooth stems, and the stipules at the base of the petiole are longer, about one half that of the petiole. The leaf has 3 leaflets with the middle one stalked. Numerous, small, yellow pea-like flowers form an oval head  that turns reddish with maturity . Blooms in July and August. Trifolium aureum, a similar, species can be distinguished by it’s unstalked terminal leaflet.
