Meadow Goat’s Beard
Tragopogon pratensis L.
A biennial forming a rosette of smooth, long, slender leaves that curl under at the tips in the first year. It bolts and produces a flowering stalk up to 1.0 m tall in the second year. The plant has a milky latex. It has large, bright yellow dandelion-like compound flowers with ‘petals’ which have 5 notches at the tips. A conspicuous globular head of pappus forms at maturity to distribute the highly ribbed seed. Blooms from late May to September.
