A stout, erect, often variable, perennial up to 1.0 m or more tall . Leaves are lance-shaped with smooth or toothed margins, and clasp the stem. Spreads by rhizomes and forms patches. Flowers are Lompound and 2.5 cm or more in diameter . The ‘petals’ on the outer ray florets may be blue to rose to purple and the center disc florets are yellow. Blooms July to late September.
