A highly variable, fibrous-rooted perennial up to 1.0 m tall. It is closely related to fireweed, but smaller in size. Leaves are opposite and broadly lance-shaped with toothed maws Flowers have 4 pink notched petals. The fruit is a narrow, beaked pod up to 8 cm long that releases a mass of cottony pappus when it opens. Blooms in July and August.
